Why Horsforth is a stone roofing job
Cross the Aire valley from central Leeds and the building material changes. Horsforth was built from the gritstone under it, and the roofs were covered with sandstone flags split from the same quarries. You see it clearly around the old village, on Town Street, up Hall Lane and along the older parts of Long Row and Low Lane.
Stone slate roofs are laid in diminishing courses. The largest and heaviest slates sit at the eaves and the sizes step down towards the ridge, which is both a structural decision and the reason these roofs look the way they do. Get the sorting wrong on a relay and the roof looks wrong from the street forever.
What a reclaim and relay involves here
The stone itself rarely wears out. What fails is everything holding it up. Battens go, the oak pegs rot or snap, and on roofs that were torched with lime the bedding falls into the loft. So a Horsforth re-roof is mostly a careful dismantling job.
We lift the stone by hand and stack it by size on the scaffold or in the drive. Anything delaminating or cracked at the hole is set aside. The roof gets a breathable membrane and new treated battens gauged to the course sizes, then the stone goes back with new pegs, working from the eaves up in the original sequence. Shortfalls get made up from reclaimed stone, which is available in the common West Yorkshire sizes.
The timber gets checked while the roof is open. Purlin ends bearing into damp stone walls are the usual find, along with rafter feet over a gutter that has been overflowing for a decade.
Exposure and what it does up here
Horsforth catches weather that inner Leeds does not. The ground rises from the Aire and there is little shelter on the west side, so gable ends and verges take a beating. Mortar bedded verges strip here first, which is why dry verge and dry ridge conversions are a regular job on the 1930s stock around Cragg Hill and West End.
Frost matters too. Water sitting in an open mortar joint on a stone stack freezes, expands and opens the joint further, and sandstone spalls once the face has taken enough of that.
The interwar belt
Plenty of Horsforth is brick. The 1930s semis around Newlay, Fink Hill and New Road Side have tile roofs approaching ninety years old. Mortar ridges and verges go first, the original felt underlay has torn at the battens, and the rear extensions carry small flat roofs already on their second life.

Exposure on the hill
Horsforth sits high, with open ground towards the Aire valley and Rawdon. West facing gables take the full run of the weather, and mortar verges here fail years earlier than they do in a sheltered inner terrace.
Long drives and good access
Most of the 1930s and later stock has driveway space for scaffold and a skip, which keeps access costs down compared with a city centre terrace.
